Challenge:

The biggest challenge for the hangar was the degradation of the lighting.  The hangar was equipped with metal halides that quickly lost 50% of the lumen output and cast a very yellow light.  Bulbs were being replaced on a monthly basis in order to keep adequate lighting and prevent shadows under the wings and tail of the aircraft.  Energy reduction was a major concern.

Solution:

The metal halides were replaced by the energy efficient Light Corporation Semaphore T8 8 lamp fluorescent fixtures.  The hangar is illuminated with better lighting and color rendering.  The light is brighter and whiter and the reflectivity off the white floors greatly improved visibility underneath the tail and wings of the aircraft. The fluorescent lighting greatly reduced energy consumption and the bulbs have a lamp life of 30,000 hours with instant restrike.

 The Kanepi Wireless Control system was installed on the fixtures," being able to manage the lights is key" said Steve King, Director of Maintenance, Cox Enterprises, Inc.  "The bays have 40 fixtures per bay and we are now able to wirelessly turn on ten or twelve fixtures at a time instead of the entire bay, saving even more energy.  It has made it much easier to control security at night. The motion sensors are set to security mode, if one motion sensor goes off the edge lighting around the hangar turns on.  Safety has improved, we are no longer stumbling around in the dark looking for a switch."
