Light introduces purchasing program for energy efficient commercial and industrial lighting products

Grand Haven, MI - Light Corporation, a world-class specialty lighting manufacturer whose product offerings enlighten the workplace, has introduced a new purchasing alternative for their energy efficient commercial and industrial lighting products. This new program called the "Energy Enlightenment Program", will allow organizations the opportunity to purchase new lighting systems without the large cash outlay usually associated with the purchase of these systems.

"Our focus at Light has always been the creation of enlightened environments. With energy-efficiency being in the forefront of people's minds today, we needed to take a step back and focus on how to best help companies attain these goals without having to invest significantly on the front-end", remarked Larry Leete, Director of Sales and Marketing for In-Industry Markets. "The payback for these retrofits falls in the realm of twelve to fifteen months. Companies can reduce their energy consumption in half and increase the light levels of their environments by 25% in the process - creating an energy conscious, better-lit facility. However, the initial cash outlay sometimes forces companies to put off until later what they should be doing now. This new program will allow them to pay for this retrofit out of the monthly energy savings that they will attain by switching systems. This immediately allows them to see a positive cash flow, brighter facilities, and increased productivity levels from their workers which are associated with this type of switch-out - all without any large cash outlay."

As an example, a company that currently utilizes three-hundred and sixty-six (366) 400w metal halide fixtures for their facility will spend approximately $64,960 yearly ($5,413.34 per month) on energy to light their facility. By switching to Light's Semaphore fixtures, this company would spend $34,192 yearly ($2,849.33 per month) on energy to light the same facility - a savings of $30,768 yearly ($2,564.01 per month). Utilizing Light's "Energy Enlightenment Program" the company would spend $1,929.38 per month to pay for the upgrade - putting $634.63 a month back to the company's bottom line.

"Lighting and other energy saving solutions are not typically on the top of the facility improvement list during the yearly budgeting process" said Tom Michele, Vice-President of Finance. "This program will allow companies to recognize immediate improvement in their lighting without the initial up-front cost or waiting for the next budget year."

The "Energy Enlightenment Program" is available across the entire product line of Light's Semaphore Series of fixtures and is available through Light and Light's value-added reseller partners.

Light Corporation introduces radically new wireless control technology for large and open spaces

Grand Haven, MI - Light Corporation, a world-class specialty lighting manufacturer whose product offerings enlighten the workplace, has introduced a new system of wireless control technology specifically designed for large, open spaces. This new control technology is designed to work in tandem with Light's Semaphore product line. Light's technology is a first in wireless usage for large industrial and warehouse spaces. Most wireless applications are designed for office spaces that have smaller footprints and require less distance to accommodate the needs of the end-user. As square footage increases, the need for nodes or repeaters arises so that the information can travel further from fixture to fixture. This more traditional "node" network is very expensive and therefore cost prohibitive in large and open spaces. Light, however, has solved this cost vs. distance dilemma with their new wireless technology allowing for square footage applications ranging from 50,000-2,000,000 square feet to be utilized without the need for costly nodes or repeaters. "The biggest challenge that we had to overcome in developing this system was the need to insure that the communication happened between the end-user and the individual units", explains Larry Leete, Light's Manager of Peripheral Markets. "With the sheer size of these spaces and the fact that walls, racks, and other equipment, which are all steel-based in their construction, could potentially block the communication signals from getting to the appropriate units was a huge issue for us to overcome. Our goal was to create a worry-free and redundant system that would react to the end-user's input. Nodal systems and point-to-point system couldn't do what we wanted cost-effectively." The end result was the development of a mesh-networked system that allows for individual units to pass the signal on to other units insuring communication happens across the entire network. If a signal is unable to penetrate an obstacle, the network finds an alternative route around to get the command out.

"Light's goal is to always look forward and think imaginatively to determine and anticipate the needs of our customers and partners. We call this process 'Lumintuition' and we believe it is what separates us from other lighting manufacturers. Lighting for large industrial settings and warehouses has always been looked at as a necessary evil - it's viewed simply as a cost to do business. What if we could change that perception, and turn lighting into a productivity platform for a myriad of applications that enhances the work being done within those spaces? That would be a radical new way to look at lighting. With this new technology we are just beginning to achieve that goal," remarked Leete.

The new wireless technology is designed around the need for easier user control and paired with the need to reduce installation and change-out costs associated with present technology available today. Control of the system is achieved through an intuitive software program vis a vis a laptop computer or via a proprietary hand-held remote control. The initial phase of the product is designed to accommodate four specific end-user needs.

Those needs include:

    • On/Off Capability - presently an end-user needs to go to their junction box or control box and flip the light switches individually to turn on their lights; normally these switches turn on specific "zones" or groups of lights. With this new system, the end-user can now switch on/off all of the lights at once or specific areas and zones via the remote control or computer at specific times and dates - allowing for easy, programmable changes.
    • Dimmability - this allows the end-user the ability to dim their light levels at will allowing them control over how much light they need and want to turn on.
    • Occupancy Sensing - in today's industrial and warehouse environments there are low traffic areas that don't require the lights to be on until someone enters the area. When an individual enters, an occupancy sensor detects their movement and triggers the light. Today's technology requires that each individual fixture contain an occupancy sensor or are individually wired to interconnect with one another. In both instances, this can often be costly. Light's wireless technology requires the use of one occupancy sensor that will communicate to the fixtures wirelessly that are associated with the specific zone and has them activate.
    • Re-Zoning - the biggest problem with lighting systems today is the need to move them to another circuit or zone as an organization grows or as the current tenant moves out of a space and the next one moves in. There is a tremendous amount of cost involved in rewiring lighting to different zones as the need requires it. What if, by simply "pointing and clicking", an end-user could change what lighting fixtures are connected together from a zone standpoint? How much time and effort could be saved in the move-in/change-out process? Light's new wireless technology accomplishes this need.

"Organizations today spend anywhere from 35% to 50% of their energy costs on lighting. We believe that is a tremendous amount of money associated with an investment that is often over-looked and taken for granted. Our goal is to allow end-users the control over this large investment allowing them applications to better utilize this investment. This is an exciting technology, and we're extremely pleased to be the first lighting manufacturer to develop these control systems for this type of environment," said Pat Cannon, Lights Director of Sales & Marketing. Cannon added, "When you consider the costs involved in moves, adds, or changes and the work involved in installing those aspects, having a system that is intuitive and allows you to make these moves, adds, or changes through the touch of a button is a pretty spectacular accomplishment."

Light Corporation and Schelde North America enter into a strategic alliance

Grand Haven, MI - Light Corporation, a world-class specialty lighting manufacturer whose product offerings enlighten the workplace, and Schelde North America, the premier distributor of sports equipment and sport floors, today announced the formation of a strategic alliance.

This new alliance is focused on the licensing of Light Corporation's Semaphore Technology and pairing it with Schelde North America's new Schelde Sportlight.

The agreement represents a unique relationship between the sports equipment industry and the lighting manufacturing markets.

For Light Corporation, this alliance is an example of the company expanding its reach to include markets beyond its core office furniture offering. It allows Light to identify leading organizations in complementary industries to jointly research and develop customer-centered products and services in order to enlighten the workplace - not just in the front office, but everywhere people work; and in this particular case - everywhere people play.

This agreement will give Schelde North America the ability to provide its customer base with a direct link to innovative, state-of-the-art lighting technology that will ensure quality sports-centric fixtures with a focus on high light-output, low glare, and energy efficiency. It is also a unique partnership between two West Michigan based companies branching into new markets.

Light's Manager of Peripheral Markets, Larry Leete, explained the reason for entering into this new strategic alliance. "Athletics is one of a very few activities that we do as people that is significantly "sight-specific". With that being the case, it's imperative that the lighting that supports these activities enhance the play and not hinder it. Glare, low-light levels, and low CRI levels all restrict the potential an athlete possesses. We want to help them to attain their potential; that's our ultimate goal. With Schelde North America, we have found a partner that has that very same belief - and in the end, it's all about synergy."

Jim Peterson, President of Schelde North America, added, "Schelde North America has provided the finest gymnasium equipment to some of the best athletic facilities for years. Now we're pleased to partner with Light Corporation, a fellow West Michigan based company, to bring the best in new and replacement lighting to gymnasiums all over the United States. We feel that the Schelde Sportlight is the best solution to replace expensive to operate metal halide and high-pressure sodium fixtures found in so many gyms in the US. These new fixtures provide superb lighting in large spaces and drastically reduce energy costs. For most of our customers, it just makes sense to switch to the Schelde Sportlight."

Light Corporation Introduces Manufacturing Matters

Grand Haven, MI - Light Corporation, a world-class specialty lighting manufacturer whose product offerings enlighten the workplace, introduced today - to coincide with the end of NeoCon (the World's Furniture Trade Show) - their "Manufacturing Matters" initiative. This program focuses on helping manufacturers enhance their infrastructure, increase their productivity, and create economic savings. The cornerstone of this initiative is Lights Semaphore Series of Lighting.

"With NeoCon ending today, the furniture industry - which has a tremendous presence here in the mid-west - is poised to make new furniture introductions with manufacturing ramping up to build these new products," stated Larry Leete, Light's Manager of Peripheral Markets. "The office furniture industry is starting to show life after a 5-year slump. We want to help them re-invest in themselves and keep manufacturing here in Michigan, and to a greater extent in the U.S., while at the same time helping them increase their productivity, reduce their costs, and enhance their infrastructure - all things that were placed on hold over the past few years."

The initiative pulls together product, installation, and alternative financing applications to create a total turnkey package in order to help U.S.-based manufacturers retrofit their lighting systems. "Lighting represents 20-60% of an organizations total energy costs. Our Semaphore Series of Lighting can cut those costs in half - which goes directly to the company's bottom-line," remarked Pat Cannon, Light's Director of Sales and Marketing. "That's a significant investment in itself. Add to that the higher productivity that is accomplished with better lighting environments and you have substantial savings that impact an organization. We want to keep manufacturing here in the U.S. and we want to help make these organizations more streamlined and profitable - which is why we are introducing this new initiative. By bundling these products and services together, we can offer a myriad of options to these manufacturers with payback scenarios as low as 15 months in many cases."

Light Corporation's Semaphore Series of Lighting Products Awarded Design Patent

Grand Haven, MI - Light Corporation, a world-class specialty lighting manufacturer whose product offerings enlighten the workplace, announced today that their Semaphore Series of lighting fixtures was issued a design patent, United States Patent D499507, for it's unique aesthetics and signature design. The product was created for use in industrial, warehouse, gymnasium, and retail applications utilizing the design influence of high-end architectural lighting blended with a high-output, low-power consumption lamp and ballast package creating a true balance between form and function.

"The fact that we were able to design something unique enough to be awarded this patent, considering the number of different fixtures which are in building ceilings today, is quite an accomplishment. This segment of the lighting market which we are focused on is a newer niche requiring, in our opinion, a fresh aesthetic design. We are thrilled with the award." remarked Larry Leete, Light's Manager of Peripheral Markets.

The fixtures feature an aluminum exoskeleton form-factor, designed for its clean aesthetics and lightweight manageability. The exoskeleton surrounds a modular specular reflector system specifically designed and engineered for the Semaphore Series allowing for even and focused light dispersion. Rounding out the fixture is Light's Slip-FitTM hanging system which allows for ease of installation in one-third of the time necessary to hang standard fluorescent or high-intensity discharge fixtures. Paired with an exceptional lamp and ballast package, the Semaphore Series allows for a better and higher footcandle output with half of the energy cost as compared to conventional 400W metal halide lighting systems.

New Lighting Fixture Designed for Holland Public Schools

Grand Haven, MI - Light Corporation, a world-class specialty lighting manufacturer whose product offerings enlighten the workplace, and Parkway Electric & Communications, a customer driven and results oriented company, today announced that they have developed and installed new lighting fixtures designed specifically for Holland Public Schools.

The special fluorescent fixture, which is an 8 foot derivative of Light's Semaphore 86 Series, was designed to create a cleaner and brighter atmosphere within the gymnasium settings. Light and Parkway employed emergency ballasting into the fixtures, which allow for the fixture to remain on and lit in the event of a power outage, and specially developed "cages" to protect the students from broken glass in the event an errant ball were to strike them. The fixtures were installed in Holland High School's "Dutch Dome".

Gary Zandstra, Sales & Marketing Manager for Parkway, when asked about the project stated, "When looking at the project our goal was to provide the schools with an attractive, efficient and cost effective solution. Light Corp. delivered on all three issues." Ken Simon, Director of Facilities and Transportation for Holland Public Schools, added, "The light is better than I thought it would be. The Dome is cleaner and brighter. The first groups to comment to me on this change were the photographers from the newspapers. They were thrilled that the yellow haze was finally gone and they could take good, color pictures."

In addition to the "Dutch Dome", the fixtures were also installed in West Holland Middle School's gymnasium. Trish Fodor, who is a P.E. teacher with WHMS, remarked, "The kids just seem to have more energy in the gym now. I believe the new lights are the reason for this. They're so much brighter."

"We were thrilled to participate with Parkway Electric and Ken Simon to help create these new gymnasium environments. It's important, especially when dealing with our kids, that the lighted environments support the work being done - even when that work is play," replied Larry Leete, Manager of Peripheral Markets for Light Corporation commenting on the project.

Grand Haven, MI - Light Corporation, a world-class specialty lighting manufacturer, announced today that the company has registered as a Michigan Business Pollution Prevention Partner. The Michigan Business Pollution Prevention Partnership (MBP3) is a voluntary program intended to encourage businesses to initiate and/or expand pollution prevention (P2) practices and provide recognition for those efforts.

"We are excited to be part of this unique program," said Bradley Davis, Light Corporation President and COO. "As Michigan Business Pollution Prevention Partners, we can increase our competitive edge while showing that good environmental practices make good business sense."

Pollution prevention is based on the approach that it makes more sense to eliminate or reduce the generation of waste than to treat or dispose of it once it has been generated. The Michigan Business Pollution Prevention Partnership seeks to enhance business efforts to reduce air, water, hazardous, and non-hazardous waste discharges. This voluntary program was developed through a joint effort by business, industry, professional associations, and the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ).

It is one of the first applications of T5 lighting technology in West Michigan.

The application, which will utilize 200 T5 fixtures in each facility, will allow Herman Miller to reduce their energy costs by $70.69 per fixture per year, or $13,658 per facility per year.

Jerry Akers, Herman Miller's Energy Manager, added, "We see the value in adopting new technology when it warrants it and makes sense. Although T5 technology is a newer technology in terms of facility lighting here in the US, it also is the best application for balancing light output and energy savings. Our goal is to balance our core competencies in energy conservation while at the same time insuring that our associates have the best possible working conditions in which to do their jobs. We won't make trades in one area at the cost of the other. Light's Semaphore 54 was a good solution for what we wanted to achieve."

Some key points relating to the Semaphore Series of fixtures include a proprietary modular reflector, reduced energy usage without sacrificing light-output, and Light Corporation's "Slip-Fit" suspension system which allows for the fixture to be hung in half the time of standard fluorescent and HID fixtures.

Grand Haven, MI - Light Corporation has introduced a new line of lighting fixtures designed for industrial, warehouse, gymnasium, big-box retail, and architectural applications. The product line was created to take advantage of new advancements in fluorescent technologies that have recently been introduced over the past few years.

The Semaphore Series, developed by Light, is a product family which is made up of the Semaphore 86 (6-lamp T8 fixture), the Semaphore 88 (8-lamp T8 fixture), the Semaphore 54 (4-lamp T5 fixture) and the Semaphore 56 (6-lamp T5 fixture). The product was designed to replace power-hungry HID lighting systems, and replacing them with energy efficient, high light-output fluorescent fixtures.

Light's Manager of Peripheral Markets, Larry Leete, described the rationale for entering this new dynamic market. "We decided to take our expertise in fluorescent lighting from the front office and apply our knowledge, know-how and understanding of how lighting impacts the work environment to the factory and warehouse setting where the need for good lighting is just as important." Pat Cannon, Director of Sales & Marketing, added, "With organizations looking for avenues to increase productivity levels, while at the same time decreasing costs, lighting systems are often over-looked. These fluorescent systems save an organization up to 50% in energy costs, while creating brighter, more aesthetically pleasing environments for the workers."

Some key points relating to the Semaphore Series of fixtures include a proprietary modular reflector and Light Corporation's "Slip-Fit" suspension system which allows for the fixture to be hung in half the time of standard fluorescent and HID fixtures.

Light Corporation, located in Grand Haven, Michigan, provides the lighting expertise, manufacturing, and distribution for the Semaphore Series.

Light Designated 87th Clean Corporate Citizen

Governor Jennifer M. Granholm and DEQ Director Steven E. Chester today announced that the Light Corporation in Grand Haven has been designated the 87th Michigan Clean Corporate Citizen. Founded in 1986, Light Corporation designs and manufactures energy-efficient task and ambient lighting systems for offices and homes.

"Light Corporation exemplifies the corporate image the Clean Corporate Citizen Program was based on," said Governor Granholm. "Their demonstration of environmental stewardship in the design and manufacture of their products continues to demonstrate that environmental stewardship and economic success can co-exist."

"We are fortunate to live and work in a beautiful part of the state, close to the shores of Lake Michigan," said Bradley Davis, Light Corporation President and COO. "The environment and creating sustainable products is a high priority for us, and I congratulate our entire team on this designation."

The facility earned ISO 14001 certification in February 2001, meeting the voluntary international standard for environmental management systems. To promote energy efficiency, Light Corporation uses advanced fluorescent lamps, electronic ballasts, and occupancy sensors that turn out lights in unoccupied offices. It is their policy to consider product life cycle and recyclability when designing and manufacturing their lighting systems. The facility has set and achieved goals to reduce the disposal of hazardous material by 100 percent, reduce office energy consumption by 20 percent, and purchase 100 percent recycled content corrugated packaging for product shipping.

"The associates at Light Corporation deserve this special recognition for weaving responsible environmental management into all of their programs and operations," said Director Chester. "They demonstrate that focusing on the manufacture of environmentally-friendly products can benefit their customers, the Grand Haven community, and their bottom-line."

To qualify for a Clean Corporate Citizen designation, candidates must adopt a facility-specific environmental management system, active pollution prevention initiatives, and have a consistent record of compliance with applicable environmental requirements. The program is open to establishments regulated under any of Michigan's environmental statutes. Designations are valid for one year and must be renewed annually.

Grand Haven, MI - Light Corporation's Berkeley Table Lamp is the lamp of choice for over 300 new residence hall rooms at the University of Windsor, Ontario, Canada. University Physical Plant, Mr. Phillip Diett chose the fixtures after an extensive search for the proper lighting in residence hall rooms.

The 110 watt fixture offers separate up and down light using a 55 watt fluorescent lamp for each function. Each lamp has an individual dimming and on/off control incorporated into on table top fixture. The attractive unit will offer tremendous energy savings over conventional incandescent light sources commonly used in residence rooms.
